Why I Stopped Using AI for My Writing and You Should Too

The Journey to Authentic Writing
A few months back, I began my writing journey on Medium, curious to explore whether it was feasible to generate income as a side gig. Like many others, I hoped to make a decent amount with minimal effort.
As a new college student in Germany, I want to clarify that I’m not a seasoned author. I'm an everyday individual venturing into writing without prior experience or expertise. In this age of Artificial Intelligence, I thought to myself: "Why not let ChatGPT handle the writing for me?" The idea of relaxing while getting paid for something I hadn’t done seemed appealing.
However, this leads us to the crux of my narrative: the reasons to steer clear of ChatGPT in your writing endeavors.
First and foremost, I have a genuine appreciation for AI. It serves as a valuable tool in daily life, aiding with various tasks. Yet, I made the decision to stop using ChatGPT for my writing. In my experience, stories I crafted myself outperformed those generated by AI.
Often, I encounter AI-generated stories on Medium that barely attract any views. This highlights a crucial point: the quality of your narrative is essential. One self-authored story can be as impactful as five to ten produced by AI.
The Creativity Factor
Beyond the minimal financial rewards, relying on AI strips away the essence of creativity in your writing. It’s vital to express your own thoughts and emotions. AI cannot replicate the depth and nuance of human expression. Often, AI-generated texts lean on clichés, making them predictable. You can often glean the entire message just from the title, as AI lacks the ability to convey originality.
Another drawback of AI is its emotional flatness. Since it primarily focuses on facts, if your goal is to resonate with your audience on an emotional level, you must write the piece yourself. Medium is designed as a platform for human creativity, aiming to provide a safe space for writers and protect their work from excessive AI influence. If I wanted to read AI-generated content, I could easily query ChatGPT directly.
It's also worth noting that AI can mislead; there are instances where it fabricates facts. While I still utilize ChatGPT for research, I never take its information at face value without verifying it. You should adopt the same cautious approach.
Moreover, do you want your narratives to come across as dull and monotonous? I certainly don’t, and that’s often how AI operates! The art of storytelling requires your unique voice to captivate readers and keep them returning for more.
Lastly, I believe it's unfair to diligent authors who invest significant effort into their craft while others may earn similarly through AI-generated content without putting in the work.
To wrap things up, what are your thoughts on using AI for research?
