Transform Your Life: Five Habits That Turned Me Into an Ironman

Written on

Chapter 1: The Challenge of a Lifetime

I recently achieved the most significant mental and physical milestone of my life. After completing a 3.8-kilometer (2.4 miles) swim, a 180-kilometer (112 miles) bike ride, and a 42-kilometer (26 miles) run, I crossed the finish line and was greeted with the exhilarating words, “Jari, you are an IRONMAN.”

An Ironman triathlon is widely regarded as one of the toughest physical feats globally. I chose to take on this challenge because I felt trapped in a personal rut and needed a fresh challenge to reignite my drive.

To be candid, I had grown too comfortable in my daily routine, so I knew it was time to step outside my comfort zone. If someone had told my 20-year-old self that I would finish an Ironman nine years later, I would have found it hard to believe. Despite my lofty aspirations, I often fell short due to my tendency to procrastinate.

In this article, I’ll share five key habits that empowered me to transition from a chronic procrastinator to an Ironman finisher. These habits can enhance your motivation, self-discipline, and productivity in any aspect of life, not just during Ironman training.

Section 1.1: Start Before You Feel Prepared

When I registered for the Ironman ten months prior, I certainly didn’t feel ready. I struggled with my swimming technique, lacked a racing bike, had no prior triathlon experience, and my longest run in two years was just 6 miles (10 km).

Yet, I chose to embark on this endeavor despite my lack of readiness. By signing up for the race and announcing my commitment to everyone, I created a sense of accountability that propelled me into immediate action. This decision underscored a crucial lesson: waiting for the perfect moment often leads to inaction.

If you're holding back from pursuing a new project or goal until you feel completely prepared, you may never begin. There will always be countless reasons to delay. Whether you aspire to write a book, launch a business, or take on an Ironman, start today with whatever small step you can take.

The first video discusses how a simple five-second trick can help eliminate procrastination and enable you to achieve more by doing less.

Section 1.2: Break Down Big Goals

Upon signing up for the Ironman, I was filled with anxiety. The sheer distance involved was daunting, leaving me to wonder how I would manage to complete it.

To tackle this colossal challenge, I employed the ‘goal-chunking’ technique. This method involves breaking down large, overwhelming goals into smaller, manageable tasks, making the entire process feel less intimidating.

For my Ironman training, I established monthly, weekly, and daily goals:

  • Monthly Goal: 8 swim sessions, 12 bike rides, and 10 runs
  • Weekly Goal: 2 swim sessions, 3 bike rides, and 2 runs
  • Daily Goal: Complete a 13 km (8 mile) run

Each small goal I accomplished provided a sense of progress, which motivated me and kept procrastination at bay. Instead of fixating on the daunting Ironman distance, I concentrated on excelling in that day's training.

This ‘goal-chunking’ strategy is applicable to any large goal. For instance, if you aim to write a book, focus on writing a specific number of words weekly or even daily instead of being overwhelmed by the total word count.

Section 1.3: Surround Yourself with Supportive Peers

Achieving the Ironman would have been nearly impossible without a supportive network. Maintaining high levels of motivation and discipline while training alone for ten months is incredibly challenging.

To combat this, I involved others in my journey:

  • I hired a personal trainer for weekly sessions.
  • I trained with friends several times a month.
  • I enlisted my girlfriend to help keep me accountable for my training goals.

Human psychology shows that we tend to perform better when held accountable by others. Plus, training alongside others made the process much more enjoyable.

Coach and trainee during training

As an introvert, I often prefer solitude. However, I quickly learned that collaborating with inspiring individuals can elevate your efforts significantly. On those early mornings when I’d rather stay in bed, my coach was there to motivate me. On rainy days, my training partners kept me going.

If you have ambitious goals, don’t pursue them in isolation. Surround yourself with individuals who inspire you to elevate your performance, whether by hiring a coach, joining a community, or teaming up with a friend.

Chapter 2: Protect Your Energy

Training for an Ironman demands 15–20 hours per week. Without prioritizing your health and energy, you risk burnout and constant exhaustion.

To maintain my energy levels, I adopted several habits:

  • Ensure 7–8 hours of sleep each night
  • Avoid alcohol for at least four months before the Ironman
  • Consume ample electrolytes daily
  • Follow a high-carb diet to fuel my training
  • Drink at least 3 liters of water daily

Optimizing your energy is vital not just for training but for excelling in any area of life. When you’re fatigued, motivation wanes, making you susceptible to distractions and reducing your overall performance.

Regardless of your goals, prioritizing your energy is essential. Ensure you get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods, manage stress effectively, and stay active.

Chapter 3: Master Your Time

Balancing 15–20 hours of training with running a business can quickly become overwhelming. Therefore, effective time management was crucial for me.

Each Sunday, I dedicated a few moments to plan all my training sessions and essential business tasks for the week using Google Calendar. This not only kept me on track with my Ironman preparation but also provided a sense of control.

Weeks where I failed to plan effectively resulted in chaos, causing me to miss training sessions or extend my workday unnecessarily, often sacrificing social time with friends.

To maximize productivity and maintain peace of mind, it’s essential to plan your days and weeks in advance. Scheduling your activities makes life significantly easier to navigate.
