A Journey into My First Photography Exhibit Experience

Written on

Chapter 1: Contemplating My First Exhibit

Recently, I had a brief discussion with a fellow photographer about the process of showcasing one's work. Historically, I viewed this endeavor as quite labor-intensive. However, over the last couple of months, I've begun to seriously consider the idea of displaying my photographs. My plan is not to organize a grand exhibition, but rather to present a modest selection of images as a way to ease into the experience. At this stage, what matters most to me is to publicly display my photography, properly framed and printed, to a small audience. My goal is not to sell my work but to take another step in my artistic journey. This article aims to outline my thought process as I move forward.

Section 1.1: Selecting the Right Material

To begin, I intend to sift through my collection of images to identify a specific theme. The objective is to create an initial group of photographs that resonate with this theme. I will then curate the selected images to ensure they complement one another, considering how they can be arranged across various walls. This thematic cohesion will enhance the overall aesthetic of the exhibit.

Subsection 1.1.1: Preparing the Prints

Next on my agenda is the printing of proofs. The quality of the prints will depend on how the negatives are scanned and the type of film used, whether it’s 35mm or 120. Based on previous experiences, I can achieve a print size of up to 40x30cm while maintaining good quality. Additionally, I must take into account the type of paper, as this will significantly affect the final result. It’s also crucial to verify that the colors align with my original vision.

Section 1.2: The Importance of Framing

Framing is essential to how viewers perceive the artwork as a whole. The frame should harmonize with both the artwork and the exhibition space. The border plays a significant role, providing breathing room around the print and allowing for space to sign and number the piece for authenticity. From my visits to other exhibitions, I've learned that the lighting on both the frame and the print is vital; it can direct the viewer’s gaze and enrich their overall experience.

Conclusion

That effectively summarizes my preliminary plan. Although there may be additional aspects to consider that I haven’t mentioned in this article, I believe this serves as a solid starting point. I welcome any suggestions on what you would do differently. Thank you for your time and for reading!
