Growing Older: A Journey of Increased Care and Joy

Chapter 1: The Myth of Indifference in Aging
It's often said that as we age, we tend to care less about the world around us. However, I contend that this notion is a misconception, especially for those of us who take the time to reflect on our experiences.
Critical Development Phases
During our formative years, we have the luxury to be unconcerned about many aspects of life. Everything feels novel, and it can be exhilarating to embrace that uncertainty. In hindsight, I sometimes wish I had taken more risks and been less cautious. Surrounded by endless possibilities, it felt natural to jump in without hesitation. I devoted hours to books, shows, and music that I might overlook today. Back then, I found something intriguing in nearly everyone, as they all had lessons to share. Yet, I’ve come to realize that many individuals tend to repeat the same life lessons, a curriculum I could easily forgo.
The Importance of the Present
Currently, I place great emphasis on how I spend my time. No longer am I in a rush to fill every moment with productivity, as I learned that this approach can be counterproductive. Instead, I now prioritize joy in my activities. It makes little sense to exhaust myself on tasks that don’t bring satisfaction if happiness is the ultimate goal.
Finding Excitement in Everyday Life
A few years back, my job was merely a source of income. Today, it must provide more than financial compensation—it needs to excite me. This principle extends to my interactions and daily activities. While mundane chores like grocery shopping and dishwashing are necessary, I turn them into opportunities to enjoy a podcast or audiobook. In fact, I sometimes look forward to vacuuming simply because it allows me to immerse myself in a captivating story.
These days, one might say I’m indifferent to others' opinions, yet this is not drastically different from my teenage years. The real shift lies in how deeply I care about my actions, their execution, and the company I keep.
