Section 1.1: Locating Your Learning Material

Before beginning, identify a document or webpage that covers a new or difficult topic. It could be anything from a recent study to an older article; relevance is key. For example, I selected a paper from Anthropic AI discussing the identification of LLM features using sparse autoencoders. Since much of this material is beyond my expertise, I was eager to have ChatGPT assist me.

Section 1.2: Inputting Your Learning Material

Once you have your selected material, download it as a PDF or, if it's a webpage, copy its link. Use the paperclip icon in ChatGPT or paste the link directly into the chat window.

However, don't send the link or file just yet; you need to first include your initial prompt.

Subsection 1.2.1: The Summary and Outline Prompt

Press “Shift-Enter” and input the following prompt (which is applicable for any subject):

“Please provide an executive summary of this link [or attached document]. Then, give an overview of its sections along with their page numbers, and summarize each major section as well. Always cite your sources.”

Hit enter, and you're on your way!

Section 2.1: Initiating the Learning Process

Now that you have a structured lesson plan, you can choose specific topics for ChatGPT to elaborate on. For instance, if you're familiar with AI language models but need deeper insight into Feature Extraction, you might use the following prompt:

“Let’s explore the [your selected section] from the lesson plan. Please provide a detailed explanation of the concept based on the text. After that, I will ask questions, and you will answer them while citing your sources.”

This will initiate a standard Q&A format with ChatGPT, allowing you to delve as deeply as you wish into the subject matter.

Section 2.2: Post Q&A Learning Opportunities

Once you feel you have a solid grasp of a topic, you can either ask the AI for reading suggestions to further your understanding, or move on to another area of your learning roadmap. For instance, you could ask:

“What sections should I read to gather more information about [insert topic]?”

To continue your learning journey, you might prompt:

“Let’s dive into [the next section you wish to study] of the lesson plan. Please provide a comprehensive explanation based on the text. After that, I will ask questions, and you will cite your sources.”

For an in-depth understanding, conclude with this prompt:

“Now that I have a solid grasp of [insert topic], can you elaborate on it and explain its significance within the text, as well as its overall impact on the paper’s argument? Please be very detailed.”

You can then navigate through the remainder of your lesson plan, asking questions along the way. I encourage you to engage with the suggested readings yourself to ensure accuracy, as it's important to verify the information.
