Embracing Skills Over Knowledge for 2024: A New Year’s Perspective

Chapter 1: The Dilemma of Knowledge vs. Skill
As we step into the new year, I find myself reflecting on the goals I want to set. This reflection leads me to a crucial question: "Should I prioritize knowledge or skill in my development?" Let's delve into this together.
In today’s educational landscape, much of what we learn in schools revolves around memorizing facts. Yet, knowledge can be fleeting; it often fails to translate into practical application when needed. In contrast, skills are akin to riding a bicycle—they become ingrained and easily recalled.
Consider personality traits as an example. If you possess a strong work ethic, you won't need constant reminders like “I need to work hard” to motivate yourself; it’s inherently part of who you are. This quality is enduring.
Many individuals take time to recognize that investing in enduring attributes is more beneficial. There’s a local saying that goes, “You can’t run a mill with carried water.” Nowadays, it seems most of us are trying to sustain ourselves with temporary solutions. We often find ourselves chasing after immediate financial gains, while only a select few manage to focus on building more substantial foundations. As Warren Buffet famously said, "If you don't find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die."
Now, returning to our comparison of knowledge and skill: skill is often described as the application of knowledge. However, it’s more complex than that. Many struggle to convert what they've learned into practical abilities. For example, we might watch a YouTube tutorial to fix something in our homes, gaining insights from a skilled individual. Yet, when we attempt the task ourselves, knowledge fails to morph into skill. This transformation requires more than just acquiring information.
Skill resembles an instinctual response or a mental pathway; it becomes a part of you. For instance, while you might forget your phone number, a seasoned boxer won’t forget to duck when a punch approaches. This reflex, developed through practice, showcases how skill operates like muscle memory.
While educational institutions focus on imparting knowledge, what is truly valued in the world is skill. There are numerous individuals with driving licenses who clearly lack actual driving ability. Mastery in theory means little without practical experience. In our information-saturated age, knowledge is easily accessible and often inexpensive.
Among the challenges faced by Leonardo Da Vinci, listed in his to-do notes, were tasks that seem simple to us now due to our access to information:
- Measure the dimensions of Milan and its surroundings.
- Seek guidance from the arithmetic master on squaring a triangle.
- Consult Messer Fazio regarding proportions.
- Inquire with Maestro Antonio about mortar placements on bastions.
- Inspect Mastro Giannetto’s crossbow.
I hope I’ve effectively conveyed the fleeting nature of knowledge versus the lasting significance of skill. Before concluding, let’s reflect on the essence of skill in today’s world.
In contemporary society, skill represents what individuals offer to earn a living, while others pay for these skills. Just as in primitive societies, survival hinges on one’s abilities.
For those familiar with video games, you may have encountered skill trees. These trees can only be navigated through experience—through practice and action!
While knowledge may dazzle and impress, true value is often recognized only after the skill has been demonstrated.
Knowledge is not inherently yours; it can easily dissipate or change. Conversely, skill is an enduring asset that remains with you throughout your life. In an age where knowledge is inflating, skill is the sole currency capable of propelling you forward.
Wishing you a year filled with the pursuit of new skills…
