Reflecting on my journey, I received my first flip phone at the age of 15, and it wasn't until after college that I acquired my first smartphone and laptop. These devices have since opened a vast realm of opportunities for creativity, connection, and entertainment.
Working at two of the largest tech firms, I experienced the intense pressure of "urgency culture," which compelled me to safeguard my time and focus to accomplish tasks effectively. Fortunately, I began my journey toward simplification even before owning a smartphone. Over the past eight years, I’ve discovered numerous methods to minimize distractions, allowing me to dedicate time to more meaningful projects. I embraced a minimalist lifestyle, which involves shedding the unnecessary to create room for what truly matters.
Just like psychedelic substances, technology requires a respectful approach due to its potential to alter our mindset. Regular self-reflection, objectivity, and an awareness of technology’s psychological effects are essential.
In this attention economy, fostering a healthy relationship with our tech tools is vital. Instead of falling into mindless habits, we must reclaim control over our digital interactions. You inherently know what’s best for you; rather than adding to your “to-do” list, I hope these insights prompt you to reconsider your digital habits.

To effectively prioritize projects and focus your attention, start by identifying your core values. Brene Brown's values exercise is an excellent resource for this. After pinpointing your top two values, evaluate how your tech tools align with or detract from them.
Consider eliminating any tools that do not serve your priorities. It can also be beneficial to take breaks from certain apps to assess their true necessity.
Section 1.2: Establishing Personal Boundaries
In the corporate environment, I often felt compelled to stay engaged with group chats and emails throughout the day. A senior colleague once advised me to keep group chats open while working.
However, the concept of high-quality multitasking is a myth. Dividing attention often leads to fatigue. Over time, I’ve developed a healthy respect for my focus and energy, actively recognizing my limitations.
While personal boundaries may evolve, it’s crucial to prioritize your needs. If we fail to set boundaries, others will impose them on us, often to our detriment. Those who disregard your limits are typically the ones who benefit from your lack of them.

My journey towards digital minimalism has been a gradual process. I have often turned to technology as a coping mechanism for difficult emotions. Instead of engaging with meaningful content or creativity, I sometimes found myself spiraling into mindless consumption.
After redefining my values and establishing boundaries, I took small steps toward reducing unproductive tech use. Organizing my digital environment is akin to decluttering physical spaces; it requires systems and an understanding of why we cling to certain elements.
For instance, limiting my email usage has become an important boundary. Many of us overuse email to feel busy and productive. However, once you identify what truly matters, it becomes easier to create supportive boundaries.
Section 2.2: Removing Distractions
Upon examining my technology use, I often discovered numerous apps, notifications, and platforms that added little value to my life. Here are some strategies that have significantly enhanced my relationship with technology:
- Silence Notifications: Life is challenging enough without constant interruptions. Currently, phone calls are the only notifications I allow. I also utilize “focus mode” whenever necessary.
- Screen-Free Time Before Bed: Prioritizing quality sleep is vital for our health. Even on particularly stressful days, I adhere to my bedtime routine, which includes avoiding screens. This practice helps me unwind and prioritize my well-being over digital obligations.
- Social Media Boundaries: While online connections can be beneficial, research indicates several negative effects associated with social media use. If maintaining these platforms is essential for you, consider curating your experience.
- Curate Your Connections: Being selective about whom you follow can greatly improve your mental health. Remember, you are not responsible for other people's feelings; you can always adjust your subscriptions if needed.
- Create More than You Consume: This guideline has transformed my experience. Let go of comparisons and focus on following individuals who inspire your creativity.
- Be Mindful of Your Interactions: Reflect on how using certain apps impacts your emotions. Which accounts provide support? What content do you genuinely want to share and why? Authentic sharing will help you connect with like-minded individuals.
Consider taking regular tech breaks; leave your devices in another room, spend time outdoors, or enjoy a long bath. Even better, contemplate a tech sabbatical for a few days or weeks. I’ve noticed a significant reduction in stress during these breaks.
Remember that many tech tools are designed to keep you engaged, often at the expense of your well-being. By being mindful of your surroundings and tech habits, you can regain control and prioritize creativity and health.
Section 2.3: The Thrill of Intentionality
Adopting a more intentional approach to technology usage has been exhilarating. Time is a precious resource, and it’s easy to lose it in the digital realm.
