Transformative Times: How COVID Sparked My Journey to Freedom

Chapter 1: The Unraveling
It was early 2020, and I found myself in Wimbledon, London, clocking long hours at my recruitment job. Sales wasn't my calling, and though I was reluctant to quit, I began searching for alternatives. It was clear that a change was necessary; I needed to break free from this cycle.
On a dreary Sunday, with rain pouring and the wind howling, I savored my final day of the weekend before the grind resumed. As I stepped into my local Starbucks, thoughts of an upcoming family trip to Gran Canaria filled my mind.
As I placed my order for an oat milk latte, my thoughts were interrupted by the barista's question. I watched students around me, cramming information they might never use in the real world, much like I had during my studies in business informatics.
After receiving my coffee, I climbed the stairs, hoping to elevate my spirits. Although my dissatisfaction lingered, at least I found a seat. I opened my iPad and logged into Upwork, my last hope for a brighter future (which speaks volumes about my state of mind at the time).
I had applied for a writing job, but when the client requested a guide about casinos, I hesitated. Though I claimed experience I didn't have, the brief left me bewildered. Overwhelmed by self-doubt, I let the opportunity slip away.
Weeks passed in a blur of exhausting workdays, but a family vacation in Gran Canaria provided a brief respite. However, the moment I returned to London, the weight of my discontent returned.
Then, the world was hit by COVID-19.
Rumors circulated about my home airport in Germany potentially closing, and I took it as a sign. Without hesitation, I quit my job, packed my belongings, and returned to Germany—all in just three days.
Upon my return, my parents greeted me with warm hugs, relieved to have me back. However, I felt a profound sense of loss, unsure about my career path and regretting the choices I had made. I was drained, insecure, and drowning in self-pity—a dangerous mix.
What options did I have? The idea of returning to an office was unappealing, and the only available job was stocking shelves at a grocery store, which posed a risk to my father’s health, who was a kidney transplant recipient.
Then it struck me—I still had my Upwork account.
I hadn't deleted it. I recalled using it years ago to earn pocket money during my studies. I revamped my lackluster profile and began applying for writing jobs—more than thirty applications sent into the void.
Having come from a recruitment background, I was no stranger to rejection, though it still stung. I pushed through until finally, one opportunity materialized.
My first writing client returned, albeit at a meager rate. Yet, I was grateful for the chance. I dove into the work and kept writing. Within weeks, despite the low pay, I found myself earning more than I ever had in a corporate job.
From that point on, life transformed dramatically.
No, I didn't become wealthy overnight, but I gained the freedom to work from anywhere, travel, and spend quality time with loved ones—all thanks to what initially seemed like the worst period of my life.
To sum it up: even in the darkest times, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow.
