The Value of Hard Work: Why Shortcuts Won't Get You There

Chapter 1: The Disappearance of Hard Work
What has become of the appreciation for hard work? A quick online search will often lead you to a plethora of hacks and shortcuts. Recently, while browsing my LinkedIn feed, a particular quote caught my attention: "There are no hacks, there's only getting the work done." I can’t recall the source, but it resonated with me. It seems people are increasingly reluctant to put in the effort necessary to achieve their goals. While I support efficiency and finding improved methods, the obsession with shortcuts is alarming.
No matter the field, there’s always someone eager to sell a 'quicker' solution. Whether you want to get fit for summer, become a skilled writer, or master a difficult subject in record time, there are always opportunists ready to offer half-hearted remedies for these challenges.
Reflecting on my upbringing, which was somewhat conventional and modest, I began working at a young age. My jobs included delivering newspapers, doing yard work, pet sitting, and working in both fast food and full-service restaurants. At one point, I even worked at an ammunition company, where I endured painful blisters from lugging customer purchases to their cars. At 16, I found a job at an appliance store, and I still remember my dad visiting me during lunch one day. He imparted a crucial lesson about the significance of hard work, advising that there would be times I’d put in maximum effort without immediate rewards. That conversation stayed with me, shaping my mindset when I later joined the Navy.
Upon graduating high school, my mother explained that they couldn’t afford to send me to college. Shortly after, she offered to match whatever I could save over six months to help me get started. That was all the motivation I needed; I took on two jobs—one at Blockbuster and another with a public works company. I would work during the day, catch a brief nap, clean up, and then head to Blockbuster at night. After six months, I had saved enough to begin my college journey, which led to the next chapters of my life.
In college, I didn’t have the luxury of solely focusing on my studies. I secured a job at a local supermarket, working 40 hours a week alongside a full course load. While these weren’t desperate times, that one-time financial boost from my parents meant I needed a steady income. I worked as a cashier during the day and also took on night shifts. It was incredibly tough and at times felt unsustainable, but fueled by youthful determination, I made it work. It's astonishing what one can accomplish when pursuing a dream!
Let me highlight a couple of things from my journey. First, you won’t find a sense of entitlement in my story. Additionally, there was no concern about finding the 'perfect' job that aligned with my aspirations. My objective was straightforward: earn as much money as quickly as possible to pave my way to college. That pursuit was satisfying, and I was driven during those formative years, laying the groundwork for my future work life.
As I conclude this chapter of my career and prepare for the next, I notice a troubling lack of this kind of motivation today. While I’m not yet the old-timer yelling from my porch, the prevailing mindset is disheartening. People expend more energy searching for shortcuts than actually working hard. This misplaced focus leads to wasted time and minimal achievements.
The tendency to shy away from hard work must end. Working hard doesn’t imply doing things slowly or inefficiently; rather, it means concentrating on the task at hand until it’s completed, then moving on to the next. It’s a simple yet powerful principle.
Your capacity for hard work influences every facet of your life. It serves as a catalyst for improvement, increased productivity, and enhanced efficiency. Leave the shortcuts to those who are content with mediocrity. Embrace hard work in your pursuit of excellence, and you will thrive.
