Rediscovering Life's Passion: My Transformative Journey in Paris
Written on
Chapter 1: The Unexpected Awakening
It’s hard for me to pinpoint the exact moment I lost my enthusiasm—whether it was for my career, my marriage, or simply life itself. That was until I stumbled upon Julia Cameron's "The Artist's Way," which inspired me to start daily journaling. She advocates for "morning pages," a practice where you jot down your thoughts first thing each morning.
Previously, I was not one to write before completing my morning routine that included a workout, a shower, and a nutritious smoothie. However, I made a commitment to journal every day at a local café on my way to work.
The joy I found in writing encouraged me to sign up for a writers' retreat, an experience that was remarkable, especially considering I had never considered myself a writer. I had always been more inclined towards numbers.
Section 1.1: The Paris Writers' Retreat
My search for a retreat led me to a writers' program in Paris hosted by New York Times bestselling authors along with a well-known literary agent. I eagerly packed my bags and set off for the City of Light.
The retreat exceeded all my expectations. Our writing sessions took place in a charming loft on Île Saint-Louis, with breathtaking views of the Seine.
The experience was transformative, enriched by the presence of sixteen incredibly talented individuals from across the globe. Among them was another banker, though he held a prestigious position with the World Food Bank. The group included psychotherapists, an architect, a nurse, an economist, and even a former director of the New York State Psychiatric Institute; only one of us was a full-time writer.
Section 1.2: Creative Connections
Throughout those five days, we were treated to endless supplies of croissants and wine, while discovering the historic cafés where literary legends like Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein once gathered.
The ambiance was filled with the echoes of French philosophers such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone De Beauvoir, reminding me of my youthful days spent immersed in their writings and philosophies.
The stimulating discussions, vibrant company, and various writing exercises in the heart of Paris revitalized my spirit. It was there that I made the pivotal decision to embrace my identity as a writer, an act that dramatically altered the course of my life.
Chapter 2: A New Direction in Life
Within two years, I transitioned from my role as a financial advisor to wholeheartedly pursue my newfound passions for travel and writing. This journey has challenged me in unimaginable ways, but it has also brought tremendous fulfillment. The love I discovered during my Paris adventure seven years ago has become a guiding force in my life.
Paris has since become an annual journey for me—a symbol of my freedom and the life I wish to lead. What passions are you yearning to explore?
You don’t necessarily have to travel to Paris to uncover what ignites your spirit. It’s about reconnecting with your true self. — Jennifer Thompson
