# Navigating Uncertainty: A Family's Preparations for the Unexpected

Chapter 1: A Family Adventure Begins
Isaiah and Jacob were accustomed to their parents being ready for anything. However, they were taken aback when they noticed both cars being loaded with an abundance of supplies, many of which seemed unnecessary.
“Mommy, are we really going to eat all these meals?” Isaiah inquired, ever the curious one. The family found enjoyment in MREs during their camping trips, which served as practical training for them. They would catch fish and enjoy other provisions they brought along, but it was wise to familiarize the kids with meals-ready-to-eat.
“Are we going to need all these weapons, Mommy?” Isaiah’s emotions were mixed; part of him was thrilled, while another part felt apprehensive.
“Just think of this as a practice run,” she replied with a playful wink.
“Having a dry run is essential, even if we don’t use everything. But I want you to be prepared, sweetheart. Make sure to fill your backpack with important tools.” Isaiah understood the importance of being equipped, especially when their outings often took them to remote national parks where survival skills were crucial. He also recognized the necessity of being able to protect themselves if the situation called for it.
“Alright, Mommy. I’ll be ready for the bad guys.” Yes, Lara thought, it's essential to be prepared.
Reuniting with Papa was a joy. He engaged the kids while observing that Lara and Adam seemed to be taking far-reaching precautions for a weekend getaway, especially since it was Easter weekend.
“Am I missing something?” he pondered. If only he knew, Lara thought, wondering if he sensed something amiss.
“We decided it would be best to take both vehicles, in case we want to pursue different activities and for convenience.” He nodded, allowing Adam to manage his own family while enjoying the role of a grandfather.
Adam called everyone together, including Mitzie, their dog. “Alright, everyone. We’re bypassing Andover and El Dorado. Our destination is Junction City, which is just a short distance from the army base.”
“Is there a pool?” Jacob’s priorities were clear.
“Absolutely! Plus, we plan to hike the Flint Hills Nature Trail. There's a remarkable rock formation called Castle Rock that rises three thousand feet.” The twins were astonished; coming from the flatlands of the prairie, even a small elevation was a thrilling sight.
Previously, Lara had dabbled in rock climbing. In response to her husband’s curious glance, she subtly confirmed that she had packed her climbing gear. He acknowledged her with an approving nod.
The journey was enjoyable, with the sun shining brightly, as it often does in Kansas. Clear days were a welcome contrast to the storms that sometimes swept through.
After a couple of hours, they checked into their hotel, and swimming was a priority. Lara felt a strong urge to swim; she needed to release tension and prepare herself for whatever challenges lay ahead. With Papa entertaining the children, she seized the opportunity to focus on her laps and get a workout. The jacuzzi was a soothing relief for her back muscles, and she took time to pray, meditate, and breathe deeply. Adam, too, was mentally preparing, wondering if he had adequately equipped his family for any potential threats.
He had gathered some nature books, knowing Lara was adept at foraging. Mitzie was a reliable companion for hunting, but Adam’s weather app showed a storm brewing in the west, heading toward Kansas. They needed to remain alert.
Lara and Adam stole a moment in the jacuzzi. “Did you remember to bring the weather radios?” Lara asked, envisioning herself frantically cranking it for power in case cell service became unreliable.
“Yes, and I also got you the updated key fob for my car, just in case you need it,” he replied, always thoughtful about her needs. She smiled and kissed him, grateful.
“I hope they don't conduct a thorough ID check at the gate,” Lara expressed her concerns.
“Considering we all share the same last name, they likely know you're coming,” Adam replied sagely.
“Still, I’ll be a passenger. Let’s just hope they don’t inspect the truck’s cargo area,” she laughed.
“I know. That would be a predicament.” Adam accepted the circumstances, realizing they had no choice but to risk bringing weapons onto the base. It was a surreal thought that he would be entering a military facility with intentions to defend against his own comrades.
“Let’s go,” Lara said firmly. “We need to do this.”
With that, they dove back into the pool, which felt shockingly cold.
