Understanding the Heat: A Reflection on 2023

The year 2023 has been tumultuous. The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic lingers, NFTs have plummeted in value, Russia continues its geopolitical ambitions, artificial intelligence has taken center stage, and extreme heat has gripped the globe. NASA reported that July 2023 was the hottest July on record, with a 50% chance that the year will end up being the hottest on record due to climate change. This heat has proven deadly, leading to widespread heatwaves with unbearable temperatures, unprecedented wildfires, severe flooding, and intense storms. Unfortunately, NASA anticipates that 2024 may be even hotter. But what are the underlying reasons for this trend, and how can we prepare for another year of extreme temperatures?

Let’s revisit the factors that have contributed to the record-high temperatures of 2023. The key players are climate change, El Niño, and advancements in clean fuel regulations.

The Role of El Niño

El Niño is a complex oceanic climate phenomenon in the Pacific that transforms the ocean into a massive thermal reservoir. Typically, ocean currents bury heat in the ocean's depths, leading to a cooling effect known as La Niña. After a period, the accumulated heat can be released, resulting in the significant warming associated with El Niño. This increased heat enters the atmosphere and can dramatically alter global weather patterns.

This year, we entered a robust El Niño phase, which has elevated global temperatures. While it may seem that this record heat is a natural occurrence, human-induced climate change plays a crucial role by making El Niño events more frequent and intense due to the additional heat available in the environment. Thus, we share responsibility for the current climate situation.

However, it's essential to note that El Niño didn't officially commence until June 8, 2023, and the planet was already experiencing extreme heat prior to this date. Therefore, other factors must be contributing to this phenomenon.

Impact of Clean Fuel Regulations

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has implemented clean fuel regulations, phasing out the use of high-sulfur fossil fuels. Ships are now required to use low-sulfur fuels, which represent a significant shift in the energy landscape. Similarly, coal, a high-sulfur fuel source, is also being gradually eliminated.

So, how does this relate to the soaring temperatures of 2023? The combustion of dirty fossil fuels releases sulfur aerosols into the atmosphere, which can reflect sunlight and temporarily cool the planet. These pollutants linger for years before being absorbed by clouds and returning as acid rain. The reduction of these pollutants due to cleaner fuel laws has removed this cooling effect, revealing the true impact of climate change.

With these changes, NASA predicts that 2024 could surpass 2023 in terms of heat intensity. The current El Niño is expected to persist for several years, and as sulfur aerosol levels decline, we may face unprecedented temperature records and catastrophic consequences of climate change.

The Human Cost of Heat

The implications of this extreme heat are dire. In 2022, a cooler year, Europe witnessed 61,000 heat-related deaths. This number is likely to be much higher in 2023, and projections for 2024 are alarmingly concerning. The increased heat can lead to catastrophic flooding, intense storms, and heatwaves, threatening human life and destabilizing food supplies globally. These conditions could trigger economic and social crises, affecting both developed and developing nations.

Furthermore, the European Central Bank has highlighted that the majority of the eurozone's debt is linked to a healthy environment. Farmers, for example, are often in debt to purchase land and equipment. Extreme weather conditions could hinder their ability to manage these debts, potentially leading to a crisis reminiscent of the 2008 financial collapse. Additionally, since the 1990s, extreme heat has cost the global economy approximately $16 trillion, with future economic impacts expected to be even more severe.

Preparing for the Future

So, what can be done? The most effective solution would be to rapidly adopt nuclear, solar, and wind energy while phasing out coal and gas. Unfortunately, such a drastic shift remains a distant dream.

If policymakers had acted with foresight in previous years, we could have fortified our food systems and urban environments against extreme heat. While these measures wouldn't eliminate the consequences of a warming world, they could have mitigated some of the impacts. Sadly, these changes have yet to be implemented.

This is why NASA's prediction that 2024 will be hotter than 2023 is particularly alarming. We are entering uncharted territory without the necessary protective measures to soften the impact. Consequently, we must brace ourselves for the stark reality of climate inaction.
