This was a new concept for me, introduced as a mindfulness technique aimed at shifting our focus from being lost in thoughts or external distractions back to the present moment. It involves a subtle yet significant shift in our awareness—from distraction to mindful attention. While this idea may not be novel, it certainly resonated with me.

I find the notion of micro adjustments to be inspiring. They are small yet impactful changes. I intend to apply micro adjustments while listening, writing, or simply enjoying walks around the city. Whenever I notice my mind wandering into a loop of thoughts, I can gently redirect myself to relish the here and now.

This morning, as I baked banana bread on a rainy day, I practiced this technique. Midway through the recipe, I began rummaging through the cabinets, pondering how many spices and ingredients I’d accumulated that I would likely never use. The answer was: far too many. I considered climbing a foot ladder to clear out the top shelves, but then realized I was getting sidetracked again. I stepped down, refocused, and resumed mixing the dry ingredients into the wet batter.

Returning to my original task felt rewarding. I completed the mixing, poured the batter into the pan, and tidied up before revisiting the cabinets. It’s a simple, everyday occurrence—home chores can easily lead to distractions, but the act of returning to my initial focus was refreshing. Having a term that encapsulates that moment of conscious redirection back to the present is wonderful. Micro adjustments have become my new favorite expression.
