Growing My Medium Community: The 90-Day 10:1 Challenge

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to the Challenge

It's time to get serious about expanding my presence on Medium! Recently, I accepted an exciting invitation to take part in the 90-Day 10:1 Challenge, which begins on February 17, 2024. This challenge requires me to engage with ten articles before I can post one of my own.

The challenge was introduced by The Bear, who encourages participants to "read, learn, comment, clap, highlight, and if it resonates with you, save it to your list, follow, and subscribe." Once I learned about this opportunity, I knew I had to join in.

Sharing my weekly progress through a column will not only provide mental relief but also add a refreshing twist to my daily routine. I want to be accountable for my engagement and build my community in public, fostering connections with others.

So, here I am, publicly announcing my commitment to this challenge!

As a side note, I plan to assess my progress every Friday!

However, before I officially embark on this journey, I want to discuss a few key aspects: my current metrics, my goals, and my strategy.

Let's dive in!

Section 1.1: Current Engagement Metrics

In a challenge that emphasizes a 10:1 engagement ratio, I’ll start with my existing metrics related to engagement and article posting.

Currently, I've published 88 articles and made 3,149 comments. Surprisingly, I haven't yet hit the 100-article mark! Most of my comments are with a small circle of about 100 individuals, or responses to my own posts.

I aim to continue posting daily, which should bring my total to at least 178 articles and 4,049 comments by the end of the challenge. However, tracking accountability might be a challenge, so I plan to incorporate additional strategies to ensure I remain accountable.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Focus on Community Growth

The primary objective of this challenge is to grow my community on Medium. While earnings are not my main focus, community building is essential, and my metrics will reflect this goal.

Community growth metrics

At the time of writing, I have 721 followers and 33 email subscribers. I did notice a decline after the recent Medium bot sweep, but I hope to achieve several milestones in these areas as I work on community building. I will keep a close eye on these numbers weekly!

Story stats indicating community engagement

While my engagement in February has been minimal, I’m pleasantly surprised to see over 1,000 views. My baseline daily reads hover around 35, suggesting I have a dedicated readership of at least 20. I prioritize consistent engagement over erratic spikes in views, hoping to see these numbers increase as the challenge progresses.

Section 1.2: Daily Engagement Strategy

Moving forward, my focus will be on daily interactions. Rather than engaging randomly, I plan to connect with a select group of individuals with whom I have established some rapport. Building a community requires genuine interaction, and I believe regular conversations are the quickest way to achieve that.

To manage my engagement efficiently, I need to stay organized and accountable, and I’ve developed a tool to assist me!

Chapter 2: Tools for Success

In this masterclass, "How to GROW your audience and income on Medium [FREE Masterclass]," I’ll learn tips on expanding my reach and income on the platform.

Additionally, the video "Here's the Truth About Writing on Medium…" provides insights into the realities of writing on the platform.

To enhance my organization, I’m developing a Notion template designed to help individuals maintain structure during extensive interactions. Previously, I created a free Medium guide through Notion for those curious about my success on the platform.

Creating that guide was an enjoyable experience, inspiring me to craft a community-building template that I will test for 15 days before sharing it publicly. I'm eager to hear your thoughts on this template in the comments.

Thank you for reading, and a special thanks to Bear for inviting me to this challenge!
