Finding Joy in Yoga: Four Transformative Tips for Beginners
Written on
Chapter 1: Embracing Yoga
The journey to making yoga a regular part of my life was anything but smooth. I often found myself thinking:
- This is so tedious.
- When do we move to the next position?
- I'm feeling drowsy.
- Is this almost finished?
As a dancer, I recognized the need for enhanced flexibility and occasionally dabbled in yoga, yet consistency remained elusive.
What shifted for me?
Similar to a parent sneakily incorporating pureed veggies into a picky child's favorite dish, I began to weave yoga into my daily routine so seamlessly that I hardly realized I was genuinely committed to practicing it regularly without resistance.
If you aspire to establish a sustainable yoga routine, here are four strategies that helped me get started.
Section 1.1: Tailoring Your Practice
I designed a yoga routine that aligns with my personal interests and objectives. Rather than adhering strictly to the sequences set by other practitioners, I crafted my own. My primary focus is on achieving flexibility and alleviating discomfort while moving, so I approach yoga more as a physical complement to my weightlifting and dancing rather than a spiritual pursuit. Consequently, I skip aspects like hand-clasping in prayer or meditative moments, preferring to concentrate on stretches that specifically target my needs.
Subsection 1.1.1: Discarding Unpleasant Poses
I avoid any stretches that I find unenjoyable. For example, I have a strong aversion to the downward-facing dog pose, so I simply exclude it from my routine, focusing instead on poses that ease my hips and lower back.
Section 1.2: Making Yoga a Comfortable Ritual
I transitioned my perception of yoga from a demanding task to a soothing evening ritual. Initially, I believed I needed to dedicate significant time on a mat. Now, I perform my stretches on the bed while enjoying a show, which tricks my brain into associating the practice with relaxation rather than exertion. My routine typically lasts around 20–30 minutes—about the same length as a standard TV episode. Sometimes, I even practice in my pajamas!
Chapter 2: The Power of Music and Mindset
The first video showcases yoga tailored for those who might not enjoy traditional practices, presenting an engaging approach to the discipline.
Once I realized that I didn’t have to listen to slow, soothing music that often led me to doze off, my motivation soared. Now, I often practice while enjoying lively genres like soca, dancehall, or rap—anything upbeat that energizes me.
I celebrate my progress instead of comparing myself to advanced practitioners. Once, I couldn’t even reach my toes, but now I can comfortably touch them. While there are still challenging poses that will take time to master, I acknowledge every step I take toward my goals.
The second video provides lyrics to a song that encourages self-acceptance and positive body image—an essential reminder in our fitness journeys.
In moments of frustration, I remind myself that my journey is about personal growth. The key is to move at a pace that feels right for you—there's no need to rush.
