Embracing Your Day Job While Building a Side Hustle

Chapter 1: The Anti-Rat Race Perspective

Many self-proclaimed experts and writers on platforms like Medium advocate a common narrative: the idea that we are all stuck in joyless jobs that we must escape to find true happiness and purpose. However, this perspective can often be misleading and does not accurately reflect reality.

Before you dismiss my view, let me clarify: I recognize that there are indeed terrible jobs out there. Experiencing poor treatment from a rude boss, feeling completely disconnected from your work, or wanting to pursue a career on your own terms are all valid reasons for wanting to "break free from the rat race," a popular phrase in self-help circles over the last decade.

Yet, I find significant flaws in this prevailing mindset. Firstly, the belief that most of us are trapped in soul-crushing jobs is an overstatement. I’ve encountered claims—often in dubious YouTube advertisements—that as many as 90% of people despise their work. While it's true that many individuals are not thrilled about their jobs, statistics reveal that a considerable portion—often more than half—report satisfaction with their work, depending on the country.

Indeed, while many people may not find their jobs fulfilling, these figures starkly contrast the narrative pushed by those who suggest that nearly everyone is in a job they loathe and must escape at all costs.

Moreover, not everyone is suited to pursue entrepreneurship full-time, and the advantages of a rewarding career within a supportive organization are frequently overlooked. I’m not suggesting anyone should remain in a job that doesn’t appreciate their efforts. However, there are companies that recognize and reward hard work and dedication.

As a personal testament, at just 28 years old, I've already navigated a variety of less-than-ideal roles, from cold calling in high-pressure environments to working late-night shifts scrubbing floors. Through learning from my experiences and remaining persistent, I now work as an Early Careers Recruiter—a position I genuinely enjoy and see as a long-term career.

In building a fulfilling career, one can acquire a diverse set of soft, hard, technical, and life skills that align with personal goals and talents.

Building a fulfilling career while pursuing passions

The issue is that many so-called "gurus" fail to highlight this reality. Instead, they often deliver sweeping statements urging you to quit your job and work from a tropical beach. Transitioning a side hustle into a full-time income isn't suitable for everyone. Many individuals thrive on having a structured environment and a supervisor who nurtures their growth.

For some, the security of a job that offers a clear development path is appealing. We often look forward to enhancing our skills and learning more about our fields, with excitement about future possibilities. Simultaneously, pursuing a side project can serve as an excellent creative outlet, allowing for connections with like-minded individuals globally.

There may come a time when you face the choice of continuing your day job or fully committing to your side venture that requires your attention. For those stuck in jobs they detest, the decision to leave should be straightforward. However, we should be cautious about hastily abandoning our 9-to-5 jobs simply because we are currently dissatisfied.

This urgency is often exploited by self-improvement advocates, who offer their "solutions," typically in the form of questionable courses that promise much but deliver little.

Financially speaking, remaining tied to a single job without any alternative income streams is not a sustainable long-term strategy, as unexpected circumstances can arise. Yet, this does not mean that all 9-to-5 jobs are inherently bad. I find immense satisfaction in my current role, where I feel valued, while also heeding the advice of knowledgeable individuals to develop my online presence and diversify my income sources.

The two paths can coexist harmoniously.

Chapter 2: Exploring the Reality of Work Satisfaction

In the video "FIRE or FADE? The Newest Rat Race Con Job in Personal Finance," the speaker discusses the deceptive nature of the rat race narrative in personal finance.

The second video, "Money: Humanity's BIGGEST Illusion That Keeps Everyone In The RAT RACE | Robert Breedlove," examines how misconceptions about money contribute to the rat race mentality.
