Embracing Generalism: A Personal Perspective on Diversity

The Advantages of Being a Generalist
In a world where everyone thinks like I do, we might still be in primitive shelters, stuck in endless contemplation without achieving much. Nevertheless, having a broader perspective can be quite beneficial.
Thus, I identify as a generalist, which Merriam-Webster defines as someone with diverse or non-specialized skills, interests, or habits.
1. GAINING PERSPECTIVE
It’s all about stepping back—way back—to where everything blends into a single essence.
Sure, I have emotions, produce sounds, and hold dear traditions, just like everyone else.
Ultimately, we are all part of the same incredible tapestry, which can seem equally significant or trivial, depending on my viewpoint.
2. DISREGARDING CATEGORIES
From this broader viewpoint, another truth emerges: categories can be limiting.
I can either accept the labels assigned by self-important academics, uninformed commentators, or well-meaning relatives, or I can choose to disregard them completely.
The decision rests with me.
3. NOT EVERYONE NEEDS TO SPECIALIZE
A society without specialists would struggle to thrive. However, that doesn’t necessitate that every individual must pursue mastery.
In my alternative role as a kidney specialist, I often find myself immersed in intricate details while the broader world whirls around me.
Yes, there are financial and scientific rewards in the specifics, but I prefer to explore the entirety of the experience.
4. COGNITIVE FLEXIBILITY
When I mention flexibility, I refer to mental adaptability—my physical flexibility leaves much to be desired.
This naturally leads to questions such as: Is that field of study genuinely uninteresting? Is that genre of music really annoying? Or could it be that I’m the one who’s dull or bothersome?
As Taylor Swift reminds us, sometimes the issue lies within ourselves.
5. SAFE DOPAMINE
In today's world, where dopamine drives many of our actions, I, like everyone else, crave that neurotransmitter rush.
However, I prefer to avoid the common pitfalls of overeating, excessive drinking, or mindless scrolling.
As a generalist, the next rush is merely an insightful piece of information or a new song away.
If I develop a passion for learning, I see that as a positive addiction.
In essence, my tent—a metaphor for my diverse interests—can be an enriching space.
Why It's Better To Be A Generalist
