The Captivating Beauty of Science Over Pseudoscience

The Enchantment of Scientific Truth

In a world filled with pseudoscience, the aim here is not to undermine these beliefs, but to illustrate how the genuine understanding of reality is not dull or fabricated, but rather thrilling and breathtaking.

Many individuals claim to prefer supernatural or mystical explanations over scientific ones, labeling the latter as “unexciting.” I strongly disagree. The scientific perspective is not only fascinating but essential for the advancement of humanity.

However, my intent is not to dismiss the value of personal beliefs in the mystical or spiritual realms. Instead, I wish to highlight the captivating nature of the scientific explanations that exist for everything we encounter.

While there are various reasons people cling to pseudoscientific ideas, the notion that science is “boring” is a significant focus for me—let's delve into the allure of science through two major examples.

The Moon Landing

When it comes to the moon landing, two primary beliefs emerge:

  1. We never landed on the moon; it was all staged.
  2. We actually did land on the moon.

People are free to choose between these perspectives, despite the overwhelming lack of credible evidence supporting the idea that the moon landing was a hoax.

What perplexes me is the choice to believe that we did not achieve such a monumental feat. Is it out of cynicism? A lack of faith in human capability?

This recurring theme throughout this discussion is crucial: if you can choose to believe in something unfounded, why not embrace the more awe-inspiring and substantiated narrative instead? Rejecting the beauty of human achievement, supported by centuries of collective knowledge and effort, yields nothing.

The Big Bang Theory

It’s important to clarify that in scientific discourse, a theory is not merely a vague assumption ready to be disproven at any moment. Rather, it represents models developed through empirical evidence, observation, and analysis. These models lead to laws and predictions that further validate and expand the theory.

For instance, the Big Bang Theory helps clarify certain characteristics of our universe today, such as its density. If this theory were incorrect, our entire understanding of the universe would also be flawed.

Yet, why should one choose to believe in it? Even if we assume it remains unproven, isn’t it simply breathtaking to consider that our universe originated 14 billion years ago?

Why reject such a magnificent idea? Ongoing research aims to uncover what transpired in the first moments of the universe’s existence, when it was in an infinitely hot and dense state. The progress we are making is astoundingly remarkable.

The Irony of Ignorance

Now, I ask you to consider the device you’re using right now, likely your phone. Examine it closely. The text you are reading appears in either black on a white background or the reverse. However, that perception is an illusion created by different combinations and intensities of red, green, and blue lights tricking your brain into seeing various colors.

When you perceive yellow, no yellow light is actually emitted. This technology is genuinely mind-blowing.

Delving deeper, inside your phone lie components like CPUs and RAM, performing billions of calculations each second. Our devices must also account for the principles of the special theory of relativity to ensure synchronization. According to this theory, as speed increases, time slows down.

The fact that we have not only grasped this principle (thanks to Einstein) but also applied it practically is incredible.

Now, consider what this signifies: people deny our ability to land on the moon or accept the evidence for the Big Bang Theory. Yet, they readily acknowledge our capacity to create smartphones, satellites, and various other technologies.

Many do not realize that much of what we take for granted today is even more impressive than lunar exploration. While the moon landing is indeed a remarkable achievement, the technology we possess today far surpasses what was available in 1969.

In fact, your phone can store one million times more data than NASA’s computers used during the moon landing. Yet, individuals often overlook this while scrolling through social media, absorbing pseudoscientific claims.

This irony is striking: it is easier for some to reject our lunar achievements while simultaneously taking for granted the technology that surrounds them.

We must educate more individuals about what humanity is truly capable of to advance. How can we move forward when we shy away from the truth?

Chapter 2: The Dangers of Pseudoscience
