Chapter 1: Reinterpreting Genesis 1

When approaching Genesis 1 today, we often pose seemingly simple yet ultimately misguided questions like, “Did God create dinosaurs?” or “How old is the Earth?” However, there’s a more insightful approach to interpreting the Bible, particularly the Book of Genesis.

To enhance our comprehension of Genesis 1 and the message God, through Moses, aimed to convey to Israel, consider the following insights:

• Insight #1: Moses leads a group of Hebrew slaves who, despite their pagan backgrounds, lack a unified identity beyond their oppression.
• Insight #2: God’s purpose was to forge a nation by establishing a shared national narrative.

As such, the Book of Genesis serves two key functions:

1. To affirm that YHWH is the supreme creator deity and that all other gods are subordinate.
2. To craft a culturally significant story that lays the groundwork for the worship of YHWH.

Is Genesis a scientific account? It is important to note that Genesis seeks to convey to illiterate, idolatrous slaves that YHWH, not Ra the Sun god, is the Creator. This fundamental message is paramount.

Genesis encapsulates the truth of God’s creation in a narrative accessible to both enslaved individuals and scientists alike: God powerfully brought the universe into being. To put it another way, the authors of Genesis suggest that God is akin to the "Big Bang" theory!

An intriguing side note: The concept of the Big Bang was first proposed by a Catholic priest.

Returning to Genesis 1, the focus is less on the specific mechanisms of creation and more on the divine being behind them. It’s crucial to remember that for 4,000 years, people have not asked the scientific questions regarding Genesis 1. Our contemporary interpretations, influenced by post-Enlightenment thought, diverge from historical perspectives. Modern Christians and skeptics would benefit from considering how the fifth-century theologian St. Augustine interpreted Genesis.

What is the purpose of Genesis 1?

In Genesis 1:26–28, we uncover four fundamental purposes of God for humanity, which remain relevant today:

1. Relationship
2. Character
3. Function
4. Reproduction

Let’s briefly examine each of these purposes:

1. Relationship: Our existence is primarily defined by our relationship with God. The Church isn’t merely a social organization, though community is vital. In Genesis, we see God visiting the Garden to engage with humanity.
2. Character: Through our relationship with God, we come to understand His character. Created in His image, we are meant to reflect His likeness.
3. Function: In Genesis, Adam and Eve are tasked with governing creation. Work predates the fall; from the very beginning, God assigned a role and purpose to the first humans. While discipleship often involves structured courses, we must recognize that a significant aspect of discipleship is learning to function in line with who God created us to be.
4. Reproduction: This is crucial. Adam and Eve were designed to multiply and spread life. In essence, we do not fulfill our purpose until we engage in the discipleship of others.

This offers a pneumatological perspective on Genesis 1, prompting us to shift our focus from irrelevant inquiries to observing God's active role in creation and asking ourselves, "God, what are you doing in me now?"
