Reflecting on My 20s: Five Key Lessons for Personal Growth
Written on
Chapter 1: The Journey So Far
In my late twenties, I'm taking a moment to reflect on my past choices rather than feeling anxious about the future. I turn 29 in just six months, and instead of worrying, I recognize that my failures have taught me valuable lessons.
Some of my habits have hindered my progress, and it's crucial to address them. While I may not yet own an agency or have traveled the globe, I understand that my dynamic career path requires me to actively pursue opportunities.
If I were 20 again, here are five things I would change:
Section 1.1: Embrace Self-Approval
Caring too much about others' opinions can be detrimental. The questions like “What will they say?” or “How will they judge me?” often cloud our judgment.
The truth is, the only person whose opinion should matter is your own. I spent too much time worrying about what others thought, which ultimately led me nowhere.
Section 1.2: Prioritize Authenticity Over Approval
Being a people-pleaser is exhausting and often yields no real benefit. If you're acting to gain approval, it's time to stop.
I learned that changing for others is futile and only leads to emotional fatigue.
Subsection 1.2.1: Accept Responsibility
Instead of blaming circumstances or my feelings, I realized that everyone faces challenges.
It’s essential to stop playing the victim and instead see setbacks as opportunities. I faced my own hurdles, such as failing competitive exams and struggling to find my path.
Instead of wallowing in despair, I chose to keep moving forward.
Section 1.3: Combatting FOMO
We often find ourselves caught in the rat race, driven by the fear of missing out.
Living in the moment is a challenge, but it’s essential. We should cherish what we have and not overextend ourselves in pursuit of unattainable goals.
Section 1.4: Let Go of Perfectionism
Perfection is an illusion that can hold us back.
Striving for the perfect life, career, or relationship is counterproductive. Embracing our imperfections is far more valuable than chasing an unattainable ideal.
In Conclusion: Embracing Growth
Life has treated me well, and I take full responsibility for my choices.
If you’re in your twenties, thirties, or even forties, and have the chance to start anew, make sure to prioritize these five lessons:
- Value your own opinion above others.
- Avoid people-pleasing.
- Take control of your narrative.
- Live in the moment.
- Release the need for perfection.
