How New Writers Successfully Navigate Medium's Algorithm

Chapter 1: The Importance of Flexibility in Writing
To succeed as a writer on Medium, one must adopt a flexible approach. A rigid system often fails under pressure, as life rarely adheres to a predetermined schedule. It's essential to create a writing strategy that can adapt to unexpected challenges.
A well-crafted system should prioritize adaptability. In my experience with mission planning, I would compile a list of potential pitfalls—my "Reality Checklist." Each item, humorously dubbed a "Murphy," prompted me to devise contingency plans. However, the plans needed to allow for improvisation since flexibility is crucial in real-time decision-making.
Effective leadership is about shifting responsibilities based on situational awareness. A leader cannot see everything, and therefore, must rely on the capabilities of their team. By allowing the best-suited individual to lead at any moment, you enhance decision-making.
Making the same errors repeatedly is a choice, not a necessity. Sticking to ineffective methods isn’t progress; instead, aim for improvement. Life is about refining processes through small adjustments, where each successful iteration builds upon the last.
Small victories compound over time, creating a domino effect of success. If a method cannot be replicated consistently, it lacks true systemization and falls to chance.
Thus, it’s crucial to design a strategy that minimizes reliance on willpower. Actively combat the habits that contribute to your setbacks. When faced with obstacles, pivot and adapt, making adjustments a regular part of your routine. This is how you build a robust system that enhances your chances of success.
Setting Realistic Expectations
Start with a clear understanding of your limitations. If daily gym sessions feel unattainable, plan for three days and aim for four. If waking up early is a struggle, prioritize getting to bed earlier instead of relying on multiple alarms. This principle applies equally to writing.
Many new Medium writers grapple with maintaining a consistent publishing schedule. The challenge of finding time to write daily can be discouraging, especially when engagement and revenue fall short of expectations. Witnessing others' successes can lead to frustration.
I’ve encountered students who are still establishing their writing habits due to busy schedules. I suggested a strategy that has proven effective: on days without new content, engage with writers in your niche who are more advanced.
Not every writer can produce content daily. If writing feels like unpaid labor, burnout is likely. Instead, strive for a sustainable balance. Replace some writing time with meaningful engagement. I can attest to its effectiveness from personal experience.
While I’m not an advocate for mindlessly commenting on numerous articles just to attract attention, thoughtful interactions with five to ten writers can foster relationships. Authentic engagement is invaluable, and any resulting revenue should be viewed as a bonus rather than the main goal.
When you have a reliable set of tactics that others can replicate, you establish a successful strategy. If a method only works for you, it lacks broader applicability.
What I’m sharing has been tried and tested by myself, my students, and numerous other writers I personally know. It's proven to be effective, easy to implement, and doesn't require exceptional skills or a large following. Now it’s your turn to put this plan into action and share your progress in the comments.
