Navigating Personal Breakthroughs: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Chapter 1: The Journey Begins
My approach to determining if I'm on the right path includes some essential questions to guide my reflections throughout my journey.
It was nearly five years ago when I embarked on my first solo trip abroad. Places like Cape Town, Mexico, Atlanta, Austin, Chiang Mai, Vietnam, and Toronto became stops on my journey. As I entered the airport with a one-way ticket in hand, I felt a sense of accomplishment for achieving my dream.
Five years prior, I had left college to join startups, seeking a "real-world education." As an eager and driven individual, I was the kind of employee others aspired to be. I embraced challenges that many avoided, eagerly accepted responsibilities despite my lack of experience, and took pride in being the first to arrive and the last to leave the office (thanks to Kobe Bryant for that mentality). 💜💛
With my entire life revolving around my career, I rapidly ascended the professional ladder. Years of unpaid work transitioned into a sustainable full-time income. I encountered authors and podcasters who inspired me in entrepreneurship, some of whom later became my clients.
Finally, I gathered the resources and confidence to embrace the widely talked-about digital nomad lifestyle. However, as the plane took off, I was unaware of just how little I truly understood about myself and the world around me.
My intense focus on work meant I missed out on typical experiences most young adults enjoy. I didn’t date, attend parties, or travel for pleasure—only for business events. My social circle comprised individuals who were often at least five years my senior, sometimes even a decade or more. I even avoided music, believing it was more efficient to listen to podcasts at double speed. Yes, I recognize I was a bit unconventional. 🙈
This trip marked the first time I could rewind and engage in "childhood" activities, and I couldn't be more grateful for it! I tried surfing, acro-yoga, and Thai massages for the first time. I downloaded dating apps, faced my fears, and went on dates. I explored local markets, visited temples and waterfalls, enjoyed clubs, and, most significantly, I met incredible people living entirely different lives.
These newfound acquaintances were indifferent to my career; in fact, they cared little about work compared to my tech-focused bubble. For the first time, I realized that life could encompass more than just my job.
During the quiet moments when I wasn't out exploring, I had ample time to reflect. I pondered questions like: What if work didn't take precedence in my life? What have I always yearned to do but haven’t yet? What drives my relentless pursuit of work? What are my genuine motivations?
These may seem like trivial philosophical inquiries, but they were essential for my growth. 😜
Upon returning from my travels, I made a courageous choice to step back from all my consulting clients. After working tirelessly to reach the top, I realized that the path I was on wasn't the one I truly wanted to pursue.
What was the right direction for me? I wasn’t sure, but that was okay. The crucial step was saying no to what I didn't want, allowing me the freedom to discover the rest along the way.
What followed was unexpected: I took a sabbatical, dedicating seven months to studying and competing in chess, which turned out to be one of the top experiences of my life. ♜ I took my first Bachata class as a New Year’s resolution in 2019 and continued to pursue it, forming close friendships through Latin dance. 🕺 Lastly, I stumbled upon an ideal job opportunity in Toronto that enabled me to delve deeper into community building while living in a new country—an experience that significantly shaped my 20s. 🍁
Over the years, I have relaxed and found greater happiness. However, none of these changes would have materialized without my initial solo journey.
How to Determine if You're on the Right Path
As humans, we often assume we are on the correct path. However, having time for self-reflection allows us to evaluate our direction.
Am I truly on the right track?
Whether it’s a day spent in nature, a solo adventure, or the pandemic's forced isolation, many people began realizing that their current path might not align with their desires. This led to significant life changes for countless individuals in recent years, including the so-called "great resignation," relationship breakups, and relocating to entirely new cities.
I devised a simple equation to help clarify my thoughts:
Solo Time + New Perspectives = Personal Breakthroughs
Aha moments rarely occur during the hustle and bustle of daily life unless we reach a breaking point. While the cliché of traveling to Thailand and hiking a mountain to find your life’s purpose may seem overused, there’s truth to why such experiences lead to personal breakthroughs.
I’m not particularly fond of Tony Robbins' extensive personal growth workshops, but I cannot deny the effectiveness of his "Date with Destiny" events for some attendees. His Netflix documentary is also worth watching. The magic lies not in Robbins himself but in participants setting aside an entire weekend for self-reflection while surrounded by diverse individuals, thus gaining fresh perspectives.
This equation, however, only holds value if you actively engage in your personal breakthroughs.
What Questions Guide Your Life?
I once believed that intelligent people had life figured out, prompting me to mimic their lives in hopes of finding happiness.
For instance, some individuals base their life choices on inspiring questions such as:
- How can I make the most significant impact on the world? (Inspired by Effective Altruism)
- What decisions can I make today to minimize future regrets? (Inspired by Jeff Bezos)
- What legacy do I want to leave behind? (Inspired by the self-help genre)
In my early 20s, I aimed to govern my life by these questions to appear smarter, trendier, or more altruistic. Yet every time I did, I felt as though I was living a facade that didn’t represent my true self.
If you relate to my experience, you might have faced similar realizations.
Thus, I had to confront the difficult question:
How would I want to live if I were completely honest with myself?
After much contemplation, I arrived at my own guiding questions:
- Am I learning?
- Am I enjoying life?
- Do I feel connected to those around me?
That’s essentially it! 😁
While I certainly aspire to help others, earn a living, and gain influence, if I’m being honest, those aren’t my primary motivations at this moment.
For you, it might revolve around financial success, family, creativity, or social justice. Whatever your driving force may be, acknowledge it and embrace it without judgment, even if it differs from mine or that of others.
Life is dynamic, and your guiding questions can evolve.
After all, life would be monotonous if everyone had their paths predetermined at birth, ticking boxes like robots.
Seek new experiences, step out of your comfort zone, remain open to new ideas, spend time in solitude, and confront the tough questions.
Steve Jobs famously said,
"You can't connect the dots looking forward. You can only connect the dots looking back."
You may not initially understand how your decisions fit into the broader narrative of your life. Clarity often emerges only after taking action and reflecting on your experiences.
I wouldn't have the insights I possess today without traversing my unique journey, and I’m confident the same holds true for you.
But ultimately, you must judge for yourself.
