Mastering Temptation: The "What, So What, Now What" Approach
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Temptation
Dealing with temptation can be a significant challenge, particularly when you're striving for recovery. However, there's a powerful mental strategy that has proven effective for me during difficult times: asking three straightforward questions — "Then What?", "So What?", and "What Now?".
This paragraph will result in an indented block of text, typically used for quoting other text.
Section 1.1: The "Then What?" Question
When confronted with temptation, it's essential to think beyond the moment. Pose the question, "What is the next logical step if I give in?" Reflecting on the potential benefits and drawbacks allows for an informed decision-making process.
For example:
- If I continue to disregard my sleep, then what?
- If I keep gazing at that attractive person, then what?
- If I dwell on sensual thoughts, then what?

Section 1.2: The "So What?" Question
Recognizing your own autonomy is critical. Just because a situation triggers a response doesn’t mean you must act on it. Taking back control allows you to regain power over your reactions.
For instance:
- So what if I feel tempted? My actions are still my choice.
- So what if this image attracts me? I decide how to respond.
This mindset enables you to escape from the chains of previous behaviors and concentrate on personal growth.
Chapter 2: Taking Action with "What Now?"
After contemplating the implications and asserting your autonomy, it’s time to take action. Ask yourself, "What steps can I take to steer clear of this risky situation?"
Imagine this scenario: You notice someone attractive at the gym. Instead of fixating on it, you ask, "Now what?" The response could be to focus on your workout and prioritize your health.
Remember:
- Now what? Lift those weights and push through!
- Now what? Shift your focus towards self-improvement.
By intentionally moving toward growth, you can disrupt the cycle of temptation.
Next time temptation arises, remember to utilize these three questions: "Then What?", "So What?", and "What Now?". Give this technique a try today and share your experience with me!
