A Journey Through the Heart of West Yorkshire's Countryside

Chapter 1: Welcome Back to Yorkshire
Upon entering the scenic landscapes of Yorkshire, I realize that I have stepped into this region long before I exit the A616. The distinct “Hiyas” from the locals surprise me, as I am accustomed to London’s casual “Awight?” greeting.
During our brief stop in Holmfirth to gather some supplies, I notice the pleasant warmth that lingers, reminding me of London’s climate. It’s amusing to think that just two years ago, I was bundled up in layers and hiking pants—today, I embrace the comfort of shorts and a t-shirt.
Our cottage is nearby, and I appreciate the light traffic, a reminder that schools haven't yet concluded for the summer. This choice to start our holiday a week early has paid off, as our drive along the M1 was mostly smooth, save for a few minor delays.
One of the key reasons for returning to West Yorkshire lies in its significance to my partner. She fondly recalls childhood trips here with her family and has returned solo on numerous occasions. The cottage we’ve rented belongs to a former classmate of hers. Having lived in Yorkshire for several years and attended university in Leeds, she holds this area close to her heart. Just like our previous visit, we aim to explore as many walking trails as possible during our stay.
After unpacking our groceries and settling in, we opt for a leisurely stroll—a quick jaunt up to Royd Edge and back around the catchwater drain. This scenic loop spans approximately eight miles, which we complete in about an hour and a half. As we walk, I begin to absorb the beauty around me; the sun is setting, casting a golden hue over the hills in the distance, which we plan to climb in the coming days.
As we return to the cottage, I realize that I’ve only spent a few hours in Yorkshire, yet the relentless pace of London feels like a distant memory. With two weeks ahead of us, there are countless adventures waiting in this “country within a county.”
