The Storage Dilemma in Smartphones

With the rise of cloud services, the relevance of local storage is increasingly questioned. Not long ago, Apple was still launching phones with base storage options as low as 16GB and 32GB. I previously discussed the evolution of Apple’s base storage offerings over the years.

Apple's latest iPhone series, the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro, have made 128GB the new baseline for storage. In contrast, the iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and 12 Mini continue to feature 64GB as their standard storage size. Given that many of the available models offer 64GB as the base option, the question arises: is this enough? Has Apple improved the situation by increasing the baseline from 16GB or 32GB, or are we becoming more reliant on cloud storage solutions?

When I upgraded to the iPhone 12 Mini with its 64GB storage, I encountered challenges during the transfer from my iPhone 13 Pro, which boasts 512GB. With the iCloud Photo Library feature enabled, the ample storage on my 13 Pro meant that only a fraction of my photos were optimized. Consequently, I faced an error indicating insufficient space on the Mini, forcing me to exclude photos during the migration.

After the initial setup, another notification warned me about low storage. Upon checking, I found that the 30GB of locally stored music was a significant factor. Additionally, I discovered that "System Data" was consuming over 20GB of my storage. After rebooting and attempting to delete various apps, I realized that my iOS 16 Beta was likely the culprit behind the excessive storage usage. Once I restored the phone to iOS 15, this issue disappeared.

While it was frustrating not to run the beta software, the ability to use my phone without constant storage alerts was more beneficial. In this context, I wouldn’t necessarily advise against choosing the 64GB model. It's important to note that beta software can often lead to bugs, and this issue may not persist once iOS 16 is officially launched.

Having used my phone for a few weeks post-restoration, I haven't faced any storage concerns. Although my 13 Pro allows me to download more files locally, I find that 64GB is adequate for most users. Apple’s optimization of photos and files has improved, and while extra storage is nice if you prefer to keep media locally, it may not be essential.

If your usage mainly involves communication and streaming low-bandwidth audio such as podcasts and music, opting for the 64GB model could save you some money. My iPad Mini, which also has 64GB, has taken over many tasks I used to handle on my iPhone, such as watching videos and browsing social media, allowing my phone to maintain a lighter load.

You might assume that 64GB on the iPad Mini would lead to storage issues, but I have not encountered any. However, I anticipate challenges when I travel and want to download movies or TV shows for offline viewing. Still, the number of apps and books on my iPad Mini has never been a problem.

The decreasing conversation around storage suggests that many users find 64GB sufficient. This topic may become even less significant with the advent of 5G and Ultra-Wideband technology. Ultimately, it’s worth considering how you plan to use your device, but if you utilize cloud services, you should be perfectly fine with the basic storage option available.
