iPad Air 5 vs. iPad Pro 11": A Comprehensive Comparison

Understanding the Difference Between iPad Air 5 and iPad Pro 11"
With the launch of the iPad Air 5 featuring the M1 chip, the iPad lineup has become somewhat convoluted. While it’s impressive to see the M1 chip in the Air 5, it raises an important question: is the iPad Pro still a worthwhile investment, especially considering the availability of the M1 in the Air 5?
In my view, despite the lower price point, the compromises associated with the iPad Air are significant. The Air seems to be attempting to occupy a market niche but falls short of the mark. This issue largely stems from Apple's choices regarding storage options, pricing, and the absence of certain features. Although the iPad Air can be compared to the 11-inch iPad Pro, it ultimately lacks the same level of performance and capability.
Let’s delve into the specifics:
- Audio Quality
- Display Features
- Camera Capabilities
- Face ID vs. Touch ID
- Accessory Compatibility
- Intended Use Cases
1. Audio Quality
The iPad Air is equipped with a decent pair of stereo speakers that deliver satisfactory sound quality for watching videos or movies. Apple has consistently excelled in speaker design for their devices. However, when placed alongside the iPad Pro, which boasts quad speakers, the difference is striking. The Pro’s speakers produce rich bass and an expansive soundstage, making it an excellent choice for music and movie playback.
For example, when my partner and I enjoy movies in bed, we consistently prefer the audio from my iPad Pro over her M1 MacBook Air due to its superior sound quality. While the iPad Air features four speaker grilles, only two actually produce sound, and they can easily be obstructed when held in hand—something that doesn’t happen with the Pro's fully functioning quad speakers. If audio quality matters to you, the Pro is the better option.
2. Display Features
The display on the iPad Air measures 10.9 inches and is nearly identical to the LCD on the 11-inch iPad Pro. However, the Pro has an advantage with its ProMotion technology, which offers a buttery smooth 120Hz refresh rate. This enhancement significantly improves user experience. My father owns the original 9.7-inch iPad Pro, released in 2015, and it still feels responsive, thanks in part to ProMotion. While a 60Hz refresh rate is sufficient for many users, ProMotion elevates day-to-day usage and is particularly beneficial for artists, providing a near-real-time drawing experience.
When my iPad switches to low power mode and the refresh rate drops to 60Hz, the difference is jarring, making the device feel sluggish. If you’ve never experienced ProMotion, you may not realize the impact it has, but it truly transforms the usability of the device.
3. Camera Capabilities
The front-facing camera on the iPad Air 6 now features Center Stage, which is a nice upgrade. The rear camera is similar to that of the Pro. Unless you need the LIDAR feature, camera quality shouldn’t be the deciding factor for choosing the Pro.
4. Face ID vs. Touch ID
Face ID is superior to Touch ID, especially on an iPad. While Touch ID is efficient, Face ID provides a seamless unlocking experience, particularly when the iPad is on a desk. However, Touch ID has its advantages in scenarios where you might be wearing a mask or when holding the device horizontally, as Face ID can be obstructed.
5. Accessory Compatibility
The iPad Air aims to mimic the Pro by sharing accessory compatibility. The 11-inch Magic Keyboard works with both devices, and they utilize the same Apple Pencil (Gen 2). However, the Air lacks Thunderbolt support, which results in slower data transfer rates, a critical factor for users dealing with large files, especially when editing images or videos.
6. Intended Use Cases
Ultimately, your choice depends on how you plan to use the device. Are you primarily browsing, reading, drawing, editing photos or videos, or gaming? The iPad Air starts with 64GB of storage (which I recommend avoiding), while the Pro begins at 128GB. The Air can only be upgraded to 256GB, whereas the Pro can reach up to 2TB.
Both devices feature the same processor, but the Pro allows for greater utilization of that processing power. ProMotion and quad speakers significantly enhance the iPad experience, which is why Apple limits these features to the Pro models.
In terms of pricing, the 64GB iPad Air starts at ₹54,900, while the 128GB iPad Pro begins at ₹71,900. The Air's top configuration costs around ₹68,900, while the Pro's equivalent is priced at ₹80,900.
Should You Purchase It?
The iPad Air 5 offers great value, and with the M1 chip, it promises longevity in terms of software support. However, it lacks several features that enhance the iPad experience. If your budget allows, I highly recommend opting for the iPad Pro. Even older models from 2020 or 2018 would be excellent choices. The M1 chip may be overkill for now, but as software evolves, these devices will continue to outperform.
If your budget restricts you to the Air, you’re still getting a solid device that can handle various tasks effectively. The only decision left is which color to choose; I personally recommend the blue.
