Exploring Hidden Gems: The Value of Taking Detours

Chapter 1: Embracing the Unexpected
“Do you mind if we take a quick detour?” my girlfriend’s father inquired as he picked us up from Kingham train station. How could we refuse? I was already well-acquainted with his penchant for detours, which often led us to hidden architectural treasures.
On this occasion, he took us to St. Leonard’s church in Bledington, Gloucestershire, a stunning structure from the 12th century. The intricately carved heads adorning the west side, predominantly depicting women, welcomed us as we stepped into a realm of medieval history. The mid-morning autumn sun streamed through the north wall, enveloping us in warmth and light.
As someone who identifies as an atheist and humanist—a topic I delve into more in my book—I find sacred spaces captivating. Whether a synagogue, church, or mosque, these places serve as cultural beacons, illuminating our past and guiding us through it.
Historically, churches were one of the four foundational pillars supporting a community's health, alongside the town hall, the school, and the court. While one could escape the law, evading the divine was not an option.
However, in a more secular society, attendance at these places has dwindled. As Simon Jenkins has pointed out in both his writings and columns in The Guardian, a church serves as a museum, a venue for significant ceremonies, and a sanctuary during times of distress. The decline in religious faith should not spell doom for these magnificent structures.
On that unusually warm morning, St. Leonard’s felt both haunting and enchanting. Despite being empty—just the two of us inside—it was alive with history, as if the quiet could be broken by the voice of a priest at any moment.
After our visit, we resumed our journey.
