The Evolution of AI: A Journey Through Milestones and Key Players

Written on

Chapter 1: The Quest for Artificial General Intelligence

The narrative of artificial intelligence (AI) today revolves around its remarkable evolution. It highlights the competition among inventors, researchers, entrepreneurs, and major tech firms striving to reach the milestone of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This race is not merely a financial gamble; it also signifies a potential upheaval in our job markets and societal structures as we know them. The future hangs in the balance, resting in the hands of a select few individuals.

Among these trailblazers is Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, whose journey has been marked by episodes that have caused significant disruptions within the industry. Following one such crisis, Anthropic was established, while another recent incident almost led to OpenAI's downfall. Other notable figures include Elon Musk, who distanced himself from Larry Page, the co-founder of Google, setting the stage for OpenAI's creation. Additionally, we cannot overlook the influence of Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and Sundar Pichai, nor Peter Thiel, who ignited the race for AI talent back in 2012.

These individuals are shaping the future and sharing a vision that occasionally aligns but often gives way to mistrust and competition.

Section 1.1: Foundations of AI

In the 1950s, researchers began to investigate the possibility of “teaching” machines to answer human queries. They identified a critical milestone in this pursuit, known as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). AGI would signify machines capable of performing tasks akin to human cognitive functions, such as learning languages, thinking critically, acquiring knowledge across disciplines, and making independent decisions.

For decades, progress in this area stagnated due to a lack of significant breakthroughs. However, the landscape shifted with the contributions of British scientists Demis Hassabis and Mustafa Suleyman. They believed that the time was ripe to embark on an initiative aimed at achieving AGI, fueled by advancements in computational power and the internet's capacity to provide vast amounts of information for intelligent models.

During this pivotal time, they encountered Eliezer Yudkowsky, an early advocate for the belief that AI could address some of humanity's most pressing challenges, including cancer and poverty. Yudkowsky successfully gathered a community of theorists, scholars, and investors interested in AGI, including Peter Thiel. The collaboration among Hassabis, Suleyman, Yudkowsky, and Thiel laid the groundwork for the establishment of DeepMind in 2010, marking the dawn of modern AI. Their strategy to ignite the AGI race involved teaching machines to excel in video games.

Some might argue that IBM was a pioneer in this domain, using chess as a training tool, culminating in Deep Blue's historic victory over Garry Kasparov in 1997. Nevertheless, due to exorbitant development costs, IBM only leveraged this technology for marketing purposes, failing to explore its full potential.

With financial backing from Peter Thiel, Hassabis was invited to SpaceX's headquarters for discussions with Elon Musk, who subsequently invested in DeepMind. Following this, Hassabis and Suleyman persuaded Larry Page to join their initiative, resulting in DeepMind attracting major investors and supporters like Thiel, Musk, and Page. This caught the attention of other tech giants in Silicon Valley, including Microsoft, Baidu, and Meta, raising the question of where to locate the expertise necessary to unlock AI's full potential.

Subsection 1.1.1: The Emergence of Talent in AI

Neural Network Breakthrough in AI Development

In Toronto, Geoffrey Hinton and his two graduate students, including Ilya Sutskever, presented a groundbreaking research paper titled “The Revolutionary Technique That Quietly Changed Machine Vision Forever.” They developed a neural network capable of accurately identifying image content, a breakthrough bolstered by an initial $12 million investment from NVIDIA, which was then focused on video game graphics cards.

Recognizing the potential of his project, Hinton sought additional funding to further its development. Google acknowledged this potential and integrated Hinton's team into its advanced models research center. This prompted Hassabis and Suleyman to consider the challenges of retaining talent at DeepMind amidst fierce competition from larger tech firms. To address this, they decided to sell DeepMind under conditions that the technology would not be employed for military purposes and that all operations would be overseen by an independent board. Google acquired DeepMind, solidifying its position as a leader in AI talent.

Section 1.2: The Inception of OpenAI

One of the most influential figures in modern AI is Sam Altman. In 2015, while serving as CEO of Y Combinator, he formed a connection with Elon Musk, and they quickly aligned on their ambitions for advancing AI. Realizing that to create impactful technology, they needed to rally additional researchers, they garnered support from Musk's former associates, including Peter Thiel and Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn's founder).

Beyond their primary objectives, this coalition aimed to counter Google's expanding dominance in AI. On December 15, 2015, they publicly announced the formation of OpenAI, with Musk making an initial investment of $40 million to initiate operations. OpenAI was established as a non-profit entity, dedicating its resources to research and technology aimed at achieving AGI. The team opted to release their model as open-source, allowing anyone to leverage its full capabilities at no cost. (This commitment to open-source was a key factor in Musk's later departure from OpenAI.)

It's noteworthy that Musk played a crucial role in OpenAI's foundation, effectively persuading Ilya Sutskever to leave Google and join their initiative.

Chapter 2: Pivotal Breakthroughs in AI

The first video explores the origins of artificial intelligence, focusing on the key developments that have shaped the field over the decades. It delves into the significant milestones and the people behind them.

The second video presents the evolution of modern AI, showcasing the advancements and breakthroughs that have defined the current landscape.

The Major Hidden Change

In 2016, while the year lacked any major AI product launches, interest in AI was steadily growing. However, paradoxically, this year also saw the release of one of the most influential AI research papers: “Attention Is All You Need.” This paper introduced the transformer model, a revolutionary approach to training machines. The transformer mechanism enables language models to translate texts more efficiently and significantly enhances the learning capabilities of traditional models, although it demands substantial computational resources. This requirement naturally limited access for various companies, propelling NVIDIA to prominence in the AI landscape.

Final Thoughts

The journey of AI's development, as we know it today, mirrors the dynamics of significant historical transformations, consisting of a series of choices and risks. Initially, Google employed strategies that appeared predictable. However, as we have observed, financial resources alone are insufficient; groundbreaking ideas from a multidisciplinary team with the requisite talent are essential for propelling AI forward.

Today, it may be easy to overlook the intricate details we've discussed. Yet, understanding these elements is vital for comprehending the initial goals surrounding AI and the transformations it has undergone—both positive and negative.
