The Impact of Technology on Today's Youth

Today's children are exposed to an unprecedented level of technology compared to any prior generation. They seem to master these tools almost instinctively, as if they are inherently familiar with the digital realm. It’s almost like they are born tech-savvy.

This might make me sound antiquated, but I, too, grew up in a tech-influenced environment, albeit somewhat sheltered. Although I had access to a cell phone from a young age, my immersion in technology was limited. I can't fathom how those before me managed college without the internet or navigated without GPS.

Imagine being in my shoes—lost in Rhode Island, with no idea how to even determine "east"!

This brings us to a crucial question: Is technology a boon or a bane for children? Will they become adults who are helpless without their gadgets?

We’ve all experienced it: the dreaded moment when the internet connection drops, leaving us in a state of panic. Our lives are so intertwined with technology that the idea of a tech apocalypse raises legitimate concerns about the future of children who have known nothing else.

While I’m not particularly concerned about my math skills—my brother usually handles that—what worries me is the prospect of navigating life without technology. I’ve tried learning to read maps, but they remain a mystery to me. Without tech, I would be confined to familiar routes, such as the grocery store or the vet.

Dependency on technology also affects my social interactions. Living away from family, I rely heavily on my smartphone for communication. Without it, I would only have a couple of phone numbers memorized, and one of those belongs to my husband, who lives with me. Most of my connections are maintained through social media and email.

Moreover, the reliance on technology extends to our professional lives. Both my husband and I work in tech-centric jobs; losing that would jeopardize our livelihood and, ultimately, our well-being.

As convenient as technology is, I often wonder what would happen if it suddenly became inaccessible. My generation, along with those that follow, would face significant challenges, as this is the only way of life we’ve ever known.

Though I am not overly enthusiastic about technology—my social media presence is minimal and I primarily use my phone for calls and photos—I recognize that it has become integral to my daily routine. I could forgo television for books, and I prefer physical books over e-readers.

I find myself in a peculiar position, having grown up with technology but not fully embracing it. Yet, I acknowledge that certain aspects of my life would be unmanageable without it.

As each new generation becomes increasingly reliant on technology, it raises the question: Is this dependence beneficial?

I have my doubts, especially if we fail to teach children how to discern misinformation—a crucial skill in today’s world.
