Eclipses and the Enigmatic Ring of Fire: A Celestial Journey

Chapter 1: Understanding Annular Solar Eclipses
Witnessing the "Ring of Fire" is truly a spectacle beyond the capabilities of the naked eye. Are you there, Mr. “Bigly”?
The phenomenon of an annular solar eclipse, often referred to as the "Ring of Fire," was beautifully documented by a friend passionate about astronomy on October 14, 2023. This type of eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, but because the Moon is at its farthest point from Earth, it appears smaller than the Sun. Consequently, it doesn't completely obscure the Sun, leading to a striking visual where a dark disk (the Moon) overlays a brighter disk (the Sun). According to NASA, this creates the illusion of a glowing ring encircling the Moon.
Thanks to my generous friend, who lent us specialized eclipse glasses, my husband and I were able to safely observe this remarkable event. It’s crucial to note that NASA cautions against using regular sunglasses for solar viewing, as they do not provide adequate protection. Safe solar viewers are several thousand times darker and must meet the ISO 12312–2 international standards.
Here are two images taken by my husband of the crescent Sun, captured through eclipse glasses. While they may not rival my friend's stunning photos, they were the best we could manage using an iPhone.

The eclipse commenced around 10:27 a.m. CDT and continued for a duration of 3 hours and 11 minutes. During this time, the light from the Sun softened, casting an unusual gloom as if viewed through a darkened lens. The temperature dropped noticeably, prompting me to reach for a sweater—something I hadn’t worn since February. To my surprise, a group of mockingbirds, rarely seen in my backyard this season, made an appearance at my birdbath.
I lingered on the patio for forty-five minutes, eagerly anticipating the appearance of the iconic "Ring of Fire." As the crescent Sun diminished in size, my impatience grew. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of stepping inside for what I thought would be a quick five-minute lunch prep. I didn’t realize that five minutes had turned into fifteen.
By the time I returned, the Moon had moved away from the Sun's face, and the "Ring of Fire," which lasted less than five minutes, coincided perfectly with my absence. Much like Alice in Wonderland, I felt like giving myself a good talking-to.
While I missed witnessing the "Ring of Fire," I am determined not to miss the upcoming "Diamond Ring" effect, which is set to dazzle the sky on April 8, 2024. This total solar eclipse will pass through Austin, Texas, and I have already marked my calendar. I’ll be making the trip to experience this celestial marvel.
In 2017, I had my first encounter with a solar eclipse—and the thrilling diamond ring effect—while traveling through Oregon on August 21. We arrived early at a viewing spot near Lime, but we were met with a sea of a thousand cars, all waiting for the event.

Eager spectators came equipped with eclipse glasses, telescopes, and cameras, along with picnic supplies. My husband and I enjoyed chips and trail mix, washed down with soda, while chatting with neighboring picnickers. Enthusiasts from across the United States and Canada gathered, including an astronomer who had traveled from Florida. He proudly shared that he had never missed a total solar eclipse.
As the eclipse unfolded, we watched the Moon take over the Sun, and the mid-morning light transformed into a purplish hue. Applause erupted as the Moon completely covered the Sun, leaving only the blazing corona visible. We raised our drinks in celebration.
When the Sun reemerged from behind the Moon, creating the distinct diamond ring effect, a collective sound of awe swept through the crowd—somewhere between a sigh and a gasp.

“That was simply breathtaking,” the astronomer remarked, tears glistening in his eyes. I found myself feeling emotional too.
I hope to witness another stunning diamond ring in six months, and this time, I’m not letting anything distract me from the patio. I plan to either order takeout or skip lunch altogether. I simply cannot wait!
