Achieving Your Goals: A Year of Growth and Change

Chapter 1: Understanding Your Goal-Setting Challenges
Every new year, I often find myself thinking, "This is going to be my year." Yet, that optimism never seemed to materialize. I now realize that I was waiting passively for my life to unfold rather than taking the initiative to make things happen.
Dealing with depression has made it tough to commit to my aspirations. The struggle of feeling mentally drained can often feel like a barrier to progress. This year, I plan to shift my focus from the ultimate goal to recognizing and appreciating the often-overlooked, incremental steps.
Section 1.1: The Power of Saying No to Yourself
Reflecting on the past year, I can safely say that one of my most frequent justifications was, "I deserve this; money will come back." Just the other day, while lounging in bed, I thought about splurging $300 on winter clothes for my daughter, even though we live in Florida and have no trips planned to cold climates.
While treating yourself occasionally isn't wrong, it becomes problematic when it leads to impulsive spending habits, like frequent Doordash orders or excessive online shopping. Instead, I suggest redirecting that extra cash towards savings or personal projects.
Creating boundaries is crucial. It’s about sacrificing short-term indulgences for long-term growth and consistency.
Subsection 1.1.1: Embracing Sacrifice
Section 1.2: Consistency Over Natural Talent
Success doesn't stem from being naturally gifted; it comes from showing up consistently. I often found myself discouraged by the lack of immediate results, even when I told myself to take it slow.
A lesson from Will Smith's show, "The Best Shape Of My Life," illustrates this well. He recalled how his father taught him and his brother to focus on laying one brick at a time while building a wall. The emphasis was never on the wall itself but on the individual bricks laid each day.
If you concentrate on today’s tasks, you’ll gradually construct your own metaphorical wall.
Chapter 2: Embracing Discomfort for Growth
The first video emphasizes how most people fail to achieve their goals because they don’t take action. It highlights the importance of stepping out of your comfort zone.
Getting up early, taking cold showers, or facing criticism can cultivate resilience. It’s about pushing through discomfort to realize your potential.
Section 2.1: Overthinking as a Barrier
If overthinking were a profession, I’d likely be a millionaire by now. While planning and evaluating outcomes is beneficial, excessive contemplation can hinder progress.
Every time I glance at the unused equipment meant for my YouTube projects, I'm reminded that overthinking has never yielded results. It’s true: the best time to start was likely years ago; the second-best time is now.
Section 2.2: The Danger of Comparison
Comparing ourselves to others can be a slippery slope. My daughter, for instance, felt pressured to emulate a classmate who successfully started a baking business during the pandemic.
While it’s natural to feel inspired, it's essential to remember that everyone's path is unique. Comparison only serves a purpose when it’s between individuals with identical circumstances. Focus on your journey instead of getting distracted by others.
The Bottom Line: Taking Small Steps Forward
I recognize I have a long journey ahead, but I’m eager to rediscover the part of myself that thrived before life became challenging.
Start with tiny steps toward your aspirations. Even if you don’t reach your destination by year’s end, acknowledge your progress. Patience is key—embrace each step along the way, brick by brick.
The second video discusses the idea that focusing on goals might actually hinder your progress. It encourages a shift in mindset to achieve true success.
